How a small team of engineers in Northern California set out to rethink what a portable air conditioner could be.
Coolizi was founded in 2018 by a small group of mechanical engineers, product designers, and energy researchers who shared a simple frustration: the portable air conditioners on the market were loud, ugly, and shockingly inefficient. We believed that comfort at home should not require sacrificing aesthetics, silence, or a sensible power bill.
Our first prototype lived in the corner of a shared workshop in San Rafael for almost two years. We tore it down, rebuilt it, and tested it through every California season before we were ready to share it with anyone outside the team. The result was a portable climate system that finally felt worthy of the spaces it was meant to serve.
Today, Coolizi products are designed and assembled in California and trusted by more than twenty thousand households across the United States. We are still a small, independent company. We still answer our own customer emails. And we still believe that the best products are the ones that simply disappear into the background of your life.
Eight years of iteration, listening, and stubborn engineering.
Three engineers, one whiteboard, and the conviction that a portable AC could be both beautiful and quiet. The original concept was rendered in pencil and salvaged coffee cups.
After six failed attempts, the seventh prototype achieved the acoustic target of 38 decibels at low speed. The compressor supplier asked if we were serious. We were.
The inaugural Coolizi One reached its first five hundred customers in California, Oregon, and Washington. Word of mouth did what no marketing budget could.
We launched the Coolizi app alongside native support for the major voice assistants, opening the door to deeper automation and energy analytics for every owner.
Our third-generation platform debuts a modular filter system and an industry-leading coefficient of performance. We are just getting started.
Coolizi is a team of thirty-two people spread across three workshops, two testing labs, and a small customer experience studio. Most of us come from backgrounds in HVAC, consumer electronics, or sustainable design, and almost all of us own the product we make.
We hire slowly and we hire carefully. Every new teammate spends their first week talking to customers and their second week in the testing lab. We believe that the people who build a product should also be the people who use it, test it, and stand behind it.
Coolizi exists to make personal climate control simple, sustainable, and accessible. We believe that the air you breathe at home shapes everything from your sleep to your productivity to your long-term health, and that the systems delivering that air deserve the same care as the food on your table.
Every product decision is filtered through three questions. Does it actually make life more comfortable? Does it respect the resources that go into making and running it? Will we still be proud of it in ten years? If the answer to any of those is no, we go back to the workshop.
